Designed by Bob Grimsdell, Hans Merensky provides a truly unique golfing experience with a range of challenging holes. Having hosted many high-profile professional and amateur tournaments, the course is of widely acknowledged quality. The course is lined with bushveld forming a beautiful backdrop to the holes, and gives the impression that the course is far older than its 30 years. The 72 par course has a brilliant layout with Cynodon fairway grass and Bayview greens grass. It is common to see giraffe, warthogs and a variety of buck crossing the rolling fairways. Crocodiles and hippos can be seen in the dams around the course and create interesting water hazards. Golfers not only have to navigate the large waste bunkers and bushveld trees that line the fairway but also need to watch out for moving hazards. All this drama adds to the completely unique golfing safari experience that Hans Merensky has to offer.
The Golfers’ Halfway House takes care of the biggest of appetites with a variety of freshly prepared delights. Light lunches are served at the Golf Bar overlooking the ninth and eighteenth greens.
The Hans Merensky Hotel & Spa recently received the Diamond Arrow Award for being the highest rated golf course in a survey conducted in the province. They received 4.55 out of a possible 5, based on responses given by corporate and senior government officials in the province.
The annual Maroela Golf Tournament is hosted in April by Hans Merensky Hotel & Spa. This 3-day tournament, drawing both national and international golfers, has been hosted here for the last 23 years and is a fun-filled event with activities for the whole family.
The accommodation at the hotel epitomises luxury and home-away-from home comfort with a choice of fairwayview chalet rooms, luxury garden-view rooms and selfcatering family chalet units. All spacious bedrooms boast air conditioning, large bath and separate walk-in shower, a selection of DSTV channels and telephone. When bringing your conference to Hans Merensky Hotel & Spa nothing ordinary should be expected and a unique experience is guaranteed with a variety of in- and outdoor venues to choose from.
The IndulgeSenses Spa offers guests the opportunity to get lost in the tranquillity and beauty of the bushveld with many truly magical organic treatments. With the winter approaching and wine-lovers looking for a bit of warmth, a glass of comforting sweet muscadel is at the top of the list. When it comes to muscadel, those lovely fortified and fruity wines, the Orange River Wine Region is known as one of this wine style’s leading producers of this elixir.
Besides annually winning various local awards, a muscadel from the Orange River Cellars won a gold medal at the Muscats du Monde, the world’s foremost competition for muscat wines which is held annually in France. At this prestigious competition two years ago, the River’s Tale Red Muscadel 2002 from Orange River Cellars was also one of only 29 wines to receive the Gold accolade out of 201 wines entered into the competition from 24 countries and judged by 45 international judges. According to Koos Visser, marketing manager of Oranjerivier Wine Cellars, it is tremendously satisfying to see one of the world’s most isolated wine regions featuring on the international wine stage.
“Based in the Northern Cape region around Upington, we are 800km from the Cape winelands – and even further from the wine competition stages of France!,” says Visser. “So it was an enormous honour for Orange River Wine Cellars to receive global recognition by featuring among the top muscat wines from France, Spain, Portugal and other famous wine-producing countries.” Irrigated by the Orange River, the region’s vineyards enjoy clean air and a temperate sunny climate. The Muscat de Frontignan vineyards are mostly planted on clay soils, which adds to the body and aromatic components of the wine.
“Although Orange River Cellars is today also focussing on the production of natural table wines such as Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Shiraz and Chardonnay, we remain a producer of top-quality fortified wines due to the climate which ensures our wines are fruit-driven,” says Visser. “Our red muscadel tastes like a mouthful of sunshine – the clean, succulent sweetness of our grapes, without any wood tannins. This wine has been a staple for generations of South Africans passing through Upington on the way to their Kalahari hunting-trips, so it is great news to tell those hunters that in all these years they have had such an excellent taste for award-winning wines!” Orange River’s fortified range include red and white muscadel as well as an enticing jerepigo wine – enough warmth for the oncoming winter!

Kentz is involved in the largest coal mining project in the Southern Hemisphere
Following on the success of the QMM Madagascar project, Kentz Construction Business Unit has won the Moatize project in Mozambique, which is the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere.
Kentz manufactured the piping for this project in its newly established pipe fabrication facility and training centre in Krugersdorp, using the latest orbital welding technology. Over 160,000 diameter inches piping is being delivered to site from Krugersdorp by the in-house logistics teams, a distance of 2,000km.
Located in the Tete province of north western Mozambique, Moatize is on the banks of the Zambezi River. This area, otherwise known as the Zambezi Valley, is home to over 1.5 million people, with some 40,000 living in Moatize. The region remains one of the least developed areas of the country with half the population under the national poverty line earning less than $1 a day.
Tete is the hottest province of Mozambique. However, the heat is a small issue in comparison to the massive floods that can occur during the rainy season. Tete is rapidly being transformed. This is mainly due to the fact that it is situated on top of one of the largest untapped coal deposits in the world.
The project is located in a completely undeveloped region and the Kentz team have adapted well to the challenge. A major risk that comes with living in Moatize is the lack of local medical facilities. Kentz believes that ‘Our people are our greatest asset’ and thus it was important to have a doctor on board in the event of medical emergencies that may arise and therefore have an onsite doctor, Dr Antonio Veloso. The clinic on site is fitted with all necessary medications to handle the various emergency situations that can occur.
It was important to develop the company’s own communication and IT infrastructure as there are no landlines available for ADSL/DSL service, making an internet connection impossible. To solve this problem, a satellite system that connects to the internet server based in Midrand, Johannesburg was installed. There are over 75 users connected via the wireless network. The accommodation village is also able to connect to the internet.
With temperatures reaching up to 48 degrees in the summer, it is important to have plenty of water to drink in order to keep the workers hydrated. To this end, Kentz installed and commissioned a water purification and bottling plant, which supplies clean drinking water on site, as well as at home. Kentz have a fleet of bakkies, five buses, numerous cranes ranging in size from a 25 ton hydraulic rough terrain to a 340 ton crawler, as well as a tower crane with an 80m radius. The Kentz on-site fleet also includes 10 heavy duty tractors, 6 forklifts, and 5 cherry-pickers as well as long-haul trucks with low-bed trailers for the transportation of equipment. About Kentz
